Round 3 and More…

Round 3 of Docetaxel was on November 9th…

I was prepared for it this time… I had been loaned a hat to wear during treatment (more about that in a bit) and my oldest son and his wife were here to offer support… We headed to the Jack Ady cancer Centre and proceeded to a chemo chair… We chose one directly opposite to a couple we went through the the Chemo Teach class with and we had run in to them frequently since.  I had run into Mary Ann a few times just before this round… First on Wednesday at the lab, then on Thursday at our doctors appointments… She looked quite down on Wednesday… a little better on Thursday, but she looked like she could use a hug… So, not being who I used to be (too shy), I stepped out in front of her and held my arms open… she stepped up and we had a great hug… she whispered in my ear “I wanted to give you a hug but wasn’t sure if I should"… We said our goodbyes for the day and Mary Ann said she would try to save a chair by her on chemo day...so that’s where I sat!

Shortly after getting settled in I pulled out my borrowed hat… It is basically a chicken… I put it on and got immediate responses from everyone… It got a number of chuckles and comments (all good)… I wore it for the entire time we were there… Thanks for lending me your chicken hat David!!

The infusion went well...and fast!..  With only the Docetaxel infusion this time...and not having any previous reaction to it… it was allowed to flow at a decent rate… Cindy and Mary Ann had a great discussion about shopping for shoes...lol We all had a nice visit while the infusions flowed… Within a few hours I was done and we packed up to leave… Since we might not see Mary Ann for a while, Cindy and I gave her a hug, wished her well and were on our way… We both hope to see her and her husband soon…

I felt pretty good for the rest of the weekend… I got pretty tired, but none of the really bad stuff from the previous round… We had a great visit with our son and daughter-in-law… had lots of fun and good food… It was a great weekend!

The week went well… I got lots of rest and was feeling pretty good…

On Friday, November 16th I had to go have my next Zometa infusion… I was feeling pretty good on Friday.  Cindy and I headed to the Jack Ady cancer Centre in the afternoon and proceeded to wait… Finally, about 20 minutes after my appointment time, and about 30 minutes after arriving we were taken to a chair… There had been some confusion about my infusion… they didn’t know where the med was, or what or how to infuse it… It is not used here because it is not covered by any of our Alberta Health coverages, so they had to look it up to see what they were doing… and since I purchase it myself, I had it with me...thus, they couldn’t find it… Now there are at least 3 nursing staff that know what Zometa is and how to mix and infuse it.  Anyway… once the initial confusion was sorted out, an IV was attempted...twice...without success!!  Weird how when they find the vein without difficulty it barely hurts...but when they miss or have to DIG for a vein… OUCH!!  A second nurse came over and got one on her first try… 3 pokes...one IV started… Despite all of that, we were laughing and joking with the nurses… The infusion was started and only took 15 minutes… We said our goodbyes and headed home..

The rest of Friday went well… I felt tired, but ok…

Saturday I woke up feeling pretty good… We went about our usual Saturday morning… donuts and Starbucks… My tastes were off again… donuts were ok, but my Starbucks drink was only so so… It wasn’t the drink though… While we were sitting having our drinks I started to feel crappy!  A little bit of a headache started… I guess more of a neck ache… We did a little running around while we were out, then headed home… I had a little rest...and a number of hot flashes… I checked my temperature… it was pushing 38 again… hmmmm I guess it wasn’t the flu shot last round that caused the problem...at least not on its own… Thankfully, the fever didn’t last this time… We were able to get out again in the afternoon...and although a little tired, I felt not too bad… On Sunday, I felt tired, but otherwise fine…

This week has been pretty good… I’m still a little tired… but with lots of rest I have felt a LOT better than the last round… Tastes are starting to be better now… So I am now preparing for the next round on November 30th…

Not sure what will happen after that...although I do know I am scheduled for an MRI on the morning of the 30th… The doc wants to make sure there is nothing else going on in my hip… the pain is still there and I was hoping by now that it would be gone...or at least a LOT better… It has improved...but if I walk too much it gets pretty painful still.

Until next time....
