Major Changes in Treatment…

Things have changed since my post in November…

I was scheduled to have my 4th infusion of Docetaxel (Taxotere) on November 30th… I was also scheduled to have an MRI (I thought on my hip...turns out I was wrong...more to come) on November 30th as well.  After talking to Cindy and saying many prayers, we decided that I would not continue with the Docetaxel… On November 29th, we met with the oncologist and told him.  He was very receptive to the stoppage… after all, I have the final decision on my treatment.  He didn’t try to talk me in to continuing...but instead asked if that meant that I wanted to start on Abiraterone… I told him that was the plan.  We discussed the use of Abiraterone and what to expect… We also discussed when to start.  He thought and I agreed, that we would start after out next visit in two weeks.  At that time he would have the results of the MRI and I would have been off the Docetaxel for long enough.

On November 30th I went in for my MRI… As I said, the doc had told me he wanted to see what was going on in my hip, so I figured the MRI would be of my hip… As I was going in for the MRI I was told it was of my complete spine… I wasn’t quite sure what was happening, but there was no request to look at my pelvis.  The MRI went smoothly… although lying completely still when you are uncomfortable is not the easiest thing to do… LOL

I was scheduled to see the oncologist on December 13th… A few days before the appointment, I heard that Abiraterone had been approved for use PRIOR to chemo… only 3 months too late… but that is great news for guys who become hormone resistant in the future…

I saw the oncologist on December 13th… He had things set up for me to start Abiraterone… He also said that there were NO signs of cancer in my spine… that at least is good news.  The report says there are a few issues with disks, but I’ve known about those for 20 years now… so nothing too different… He said he figures my hip pain is due to arthritis… I have to go see my family doctor to get treatment for that… I will make an appointment to see him ASAP and see if there was any of my pelvis seen in the MRI...and if there is something else going on there… I’m sure the pain is still due to the cancer and not arthritis… but only a few more doc visits and tests will tell.

In any case… I started Abiraterone on December 14th… I take 4 pills once per day… So far I haven’t noticed any major changes in my energy levels or other side effects… things may change, but I’m hoping to make it through the Christmas season before having to deal with any major changes.

Also on December 14th I had my 4th round of Zometa… the first three all caused flu like symptoms the next day… I was prepared this time… I rested a little more and managed to make it through the weekend feeling great!!  No fever...no nausea… It was Great!

Now here we are… just a few days before Christmas… I’m feeling good… We are ready for the big day… and the days before and after… We are really looking forward to spending time with our kids and their significant others… I am very excited about feeling good right now… My sisters are also coming for Christmas dinner with us… It is going to be a great time…

Wishing you ALL a Very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Until next time....
